Denny Sinnoh's "Akihabara Starlight"

No … Thank YOU, Hanako Oku.

I love and respect this woman so much sometimes I think that my heart will BURST with happiness.  So why am I crying listening to this?

This YouTube post is not a music video, you just see a photograph of her at the time of her “Goodbye” album release.  That is OK, because I love listening to this song from that great album.  Maturity was a theme on the ‘Goodbye” album. This photo is very interesting. At first the photo does not look like her other typically “adorable little Hanako Oku” photos.  Perhaps she looks more like herself in the window’s reflection.  Is that her new self shown, with her “old self” reflected in the window? The Little Great One seems to be captured in thought … or at least I’m being sent into deep thought.

These impressions radiate out:

Sincerity.   Maturity.  Serenity.  Grace & Beauty.

“Kimi ni Arigatou”

I wonder how much time has passed since the day I met you.

You let me know the feelings you couldn’t speak out.

I walked together with you on the path between the rice fields dyed by the twilight
On a faraway street, that day I decided to persist alone.

Thank you, because you were always laughing by my side.
Even on days when tears overflowed, when it looked like I would lose,
I have always gotten over them.
I will never forget how warm your warmth is.
Because I look at the sky that links me to you when I feel lonely and want to see you.

Your joyful face, your child-like playful appearance,
I remember all of them as if it was yesterday.

I wanted to be with you more, I wonder if you could have been more gentle.
Those days which you said you loved me and embraced me appear clearly.

Thank you, because I think of you at all times.
You believed in me with a straightforward gaze, which made me stronger.
I will never forget how I called your name.
Because I look at the sky you sleep in when I’m unable to meet you in my dreams.

Thank you, because you were always laughing by my side.
Even on days when tears overflow, when it looks like I would lose, I will definitely get over them.
I will never forget how warm your warmth is.
Because I look at the sky when I feel lonely and want to see you.

Thank you, for always watching over me.

  1. I was going to ask whether you knew that she wrote and composed the song for Toyosaki Aki / 豊崎 愛生, but I guess you would have figured that out from ThatRedSky’s post on the song.

    君にありがとう ~スマイレージ 小川紗季~ by SAKIAYATYO

I like Oku Hanako’s version better, but I have to admit that the piano in Toyosaki Aki’s version is marginally more interesting to listen to.

“good-bye” is definitely an album which transitions into maturity. Consider the albums immediately before and after “good-bye”, namely Utakata and Kimi to Boku no MIchi, respectively. Utakata seemed like an experiment, playing around with new sounds and heavier arrangements; Kimi to Boku no Michi has a more mature sound and feel to it, and I would say enough so that it’s not really comparable to her earlier works. “good-bye” is that awkward transition: she’s heading to a new direction and letting go of the old.
Did you notice that she wears black square glasses in this album? She wears her iconic round red glasses in all the others (not counting her indies releases). The black glasses give her a more mature look, which further suggests letting go of “childish” ways.

    • Oh yes! I loved the glasses and her outfits for the Goodbye album. I also have the Cinderella CD single (6 songs is a single) that I ordered by mistake. There are several great photos in the lyric booklet, as well as expanded liner notes written by Hanako Oku. There was also a YouTube video out there where Oku-san is interviewed and we get to see her closet. She brings out a case of her glasses in various shapes or red, dark red, rounder and otherwise, etc. She also gets out that Ford Mustang jacket that I love (GRROWL…) and talks about that too.

      • Oh yes, I was actually thinking of that video when I wrote my comment.
And tell me, how do you order an Oku Hanako CD “by mistake”? Impossible.

      • I thought I was ordering “Goodbye” on Amazon, because the cover art looks similar. In the Amazon description it said “Compact Disc” not “CD single”. Also it was $20, so I thought it was the CD. It turns out OK, as now I have a larger collection.
