Where manga-cute meets horror: Junko Mizuno

Dear Readers, I wanted to re-blog this post from Fran who writes the “Sequins and Cherry Blossoms”. Some of you may already follow her, but I also wanted to introduce her blog to my other followers who may be interested in Japanese art and culture. Really, I feel like I should re-blog most of her pots. Her blog is a good example of the kind of posts I WISH I could write. Please enjoy this collection of interesting manga-inspired art, maybe some of her other posts as well. — Denny Sinnoh

Sequins and Cherry Blossom

Junko MizunoCovent Garden is a home from home for me. There’s hardly a day goes by that I’m not down there for dance classes of one kind or another, or meeting up with friends for dinner. So when I heard that manga graphic novelist Junko Mizuno would be exhibiting at the Atomica Gallery in Short’s Gardens, it was the work of a moment to pop in to take a look. After all, the gallery is right next to my hairdressers.

KIMONOS ON MONDAY (Week #23) : Haruka Shimazaki is A-D-O-R-A-B-L-E !

Paruru 2014

Haruka Shimazaki (島崎 遥香) is among the most popular members of AKB48. The adorably cute young Idol was born March 30, 1994 in Saitama Prefecture, Japan.  Her nickname is “Paruru”, but some fans refer to her as “Ponkotsu”.

What else?  She is a pro at riding a unicycle.  Her favorite snack is Jagabee  (potato sticks).

Haruka Shimazaki’s modeling work has earned her a reputation as being one of the most beautiful faces on Japanese magazine covers.  Of course she is a classic beauty dressed in kimono!

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

She received praise for her role in the Eien Pressure music video linked here, where she sang center.  She does not wear a kimono in the film, but is cute as a button when she does those “fist pumps” – Whoa, Whoa, Whoa, Whoa.

Please enjoy the small slideshow here.  I tried to make captions for each one.  Did you know that you can make a “comment” for each individual photo in the slideshow.  If you can think of funnier captions, please comment!

If you want to see more of “Paruru” please see my Haruka Shimazaki board on Pinterest linked here !

Dressed in a kimono, or otherwise, Shimazaki-san is A-D-O-R-A-B-L-E !

Pokémon Nicknames: Shellder and Cloyster

oyster photo

“Food for thought”

Cloyster (Japanese: パルシェン  “Parshen”) is a dual-type WATER and ICE Pokémon. It evolves from the WATER-type Shellder when exposed to a Water Stone.

cloyster and shelldon japanese art

Basically, Cloyster is a big, mean oyster.  Near the top of where it splits open is a throbbing weapon.  Shellder (Japanese: シェルダー  “Shellder” )  is a tongue-wagging scallop.  The tongue of Shellder is actually a “foot” in a real brachiopod.

I nicknamed a female Cloyster “Delores” after a famous “Seinfeld” episode. Jerry was dating a girl, and he could not remember her name.  All he knew was that her name rhymes with the name of a female body part.

(Side Note: I think only a Jerry Seinfeld fan would name a Cloyster “Mulva”.)

Cloyster humanoid art

I think the point is way far north here.

Also, Cloyster has that mysterious “pointy thing” thing above its face … so, again … heh heh … similar to the female body part, referred to by Seinfeld.

I have not named many Shellder.  I just use “Sheldon” as in the character from “The Big Bang Theory”.

sheldon pokemon card

I named one “ShellyLong” but I think I was not even trying.  “MaryShelley” is OK for Frankenstein fans.  “Me Shell” perhaps for Beatles fans.  “Shell Shocked” may work for male or female. BlahBlahBlah” is my name based on annoying tongue wagging.

shellder team

“Squirt” or “Squirt Me”, or some variation of that may be good, because real scallops propel themselves by squirting.  Maybe you like watching that type of thing.

shellder cosplay

A Shellder hoping to encounter a Cloyster I’ll bet.

The above cosplayer was “Tipping the Velvet” … so now for a little Pokémon cosplay with some “mussel” …

Discussion Question:  Will we be able to “dive” again in Hoenn?

“Pearl” or “Black Pearl” may also be appropriate names.  Don’t try “Ironclit” (a play on the nautical term “Ironclad”), as the XY name censor will not take it.

You might use the name “Ama” who were Japanese pearl divers.  However, the name refers to the divers not the oysters.

Gather your “Dive Balls” and access your “Good Rod”!   Next time you are in a coastal region, you may want to “go diving” for some Cloyster!

KIMONOS ON MONDAY (Week #22) – Sayaka Yamamoto

a fan of sayaka

This week we will take a look at the wonderful NMB48 / AKB48 member Sayaka Yamamoto and some friends.  Count me amongst her “FANS”!

Orpheus melted the heart of Persephone … then “GOOSE HOUSE” melted mine : )

orpheusmeltedtheheartofpersephone

Poor Orpheus looked back …

Poor Orpheus.  Persephone gave him a chance to save Euridice, but he broke the spell and looked back.  I am not the “Queen of The Underworld” but I can be a disagreeable and critical character. However,  I could never tell someone “Don’t Look Back” — that is how we learn!

My point you ask? I was very happy when I read a post by our fellow blogger Genkinahito’sBlog today.  He posted a song by “Goose House” which I loved. They melted my heart. I spent about an hour listening to their fun songs today.

Goosehouse (グースハウス) is a group of singers and musicians who are notable for covering Japanese songs.  They are active on YouTube and they also perform live streaming music in their USTREAM channel about once a month.  You can check out their webpage linked here.

http://goosehouse.jp/

The group’s membership has changed over the past few years, and some have graduated.  Still they are a great, fun group to watch.  The group also composes their own original songs. Even AmazonMP3 have their singles.

goosehousephoto

The amazing members of Goose House can shadow (or cover) anyone !

They have also covered several AKB48 songs!  I am ALWAYS “looking back” as I conduct my AKB History.

I will share a few of the Goose House AKB48 covers with you here, and invite you to visit the Goose House YouTube Channel to find covers of your favorite JPop groups.  They are so JOYOUS!

Here is a quickie list:

Koi Suru Fortune Cookie

Shonichi (“First Day”) – this might be my favorite!

Chou “Ponytail”

“Not Yet”a great job with a lesser-known song.

Gingham Check

Labrador Retriever

I think that Goose House captures all the fun of the original songs! … and even build on it!

Pokémon Nicknames: Skiddo and Gogoat

Good Lord Almighty ... she is beautiful!

Good Lord Almighty … she is beautiful!

Skiddo (Japanese: メェークルMeecle”) and Gogoat (Japanese: ゴーゴートGogoat”) are two of the best additions to the list of Pokémon. Although, they are not the most powerful new spirits for X and Y, these two GRASS-type Pokémon are exactly the flavor the game series needed.

Skiddo and Gogoat wallpaper

Skiddo and Gogoat wallpaper

Skiddo “evolves” into Gogoat at level 32.  Oddly, not level 23.  Many have named Skiddo “23 Skiddo” after the early 20th century American expression. I will not use that name.

I named one Skiddo “G.T.O.” after the Pontiac GTO.  I also name them “Gran Turismo”, although simply “Turismo” might also be a cool name.

I had a high school friend who had a Pontiac Lemans GTO similar to the above photo.  He referred to it as the “Goat”.  This is not an insult.  Owners of the Pontiac GTO proudly call their car a “Goat” and meetings of Pontiac enthusiasts may call their auto shows a “Gathering of the Goats.”

Wait, not THAT kind of goat lover …

Giovanni BattistaTiepolo "Female Satyr with Tambourine, Child and a Putto" (1742)

Giovanni BattistaTiepolo “Female Satyr with Tambourine, Child and a Putto” (1742)

It is hotly contested amongst Goat-lovers, but the Pontiac GTO name is probably based on the Ferrari 250 Gran Turismo Omologato.  The term refers to a particular category of European race tracks.  If a car has the GTO label, it is theoretically qualified to race in that class of automobile racing.  “Omologato” is sometimes used as Italian slang for goat.

Marios rules of Italian driving: "wattsa behind me, she-a already gone"

Mario’s rules for Italian driving: “watt-sa behind me, she-a already a gone”

Critics claim that GTO stood for “Gas, Tires, Oil”, all of which both the Pontiac and the Ferrari used in large quantities.  Unless cartoons were lying to me when I was growing up, goats will eat anything — even tin cans and the like.  Maybe General Motors should bring back a hybrid/flex-fuel vehicle and call it “the Goat.”

It is reasonable to give an automobile moniker to a Skiddo/Gogoat as these Pokémon may be ridden in Kalos. You can gallop around on a Skiddo at the Skiddo Ranch, or you may rise the Gogoat Service in Limiose City.

riding a gogoat in lumiose city

I sometimes cruise around the cities of Kalos on my Gogoat while I listen to the Ramones.  Just listen to this link:

Well the girls out there knock me out you know/cruisin’ around in my GTO…I hate the teachers and the principal/Don’t want to taught to be no fool ..

Fun, Fun, Oh Baby … really takes be back … but alas, I digress once more …

Of course, names like “Capricorn” might be good.  “Serow” may be good if you are a Japan-philatelic-ophile, as these beasts are wild Japanese goats (see stamp).

220px-8Yen_stamp_in_1952

“Grassmunch” may be a name if you are feeling playful, but that is just a joke.  (I could not get “ass” past the new censorship algorithm in XY, so I had to use the triangle-symbol in place of the “a”.)

Gogoat NO! You are munching the wrong grass!

Gogoat NO! You are munching the wrong grass!

“Billy” might be OK for a male Skiddo, as in the word “Billy Goat”

I like the name “Headcheese” after “Goat’s head cheese” if you can stomach that deli item!

“Nanny” may might be OK for a female Gogoat. A female might also be called “Baaabara” although this name might be better for sheep.

It may be a mega-obtuse reference, but you could call a Gogoat “BowlingScore” after the well known folk song:

“My goat knows the bowling score, Hallelujah.”.

Pokémon Nicknames: Bunnelby

bunnleby biden

Good thing that you can now use twelve letters in the Kalos Region!

Bunnelby (Japanese:  ホルビー “Horubee”) is a NORMAL-type Pokémon.  It “evolves” into Diggersby starting at level 20.  Bunnelby always looks perplexed, always has the look like he is in way over his head.  He is talking, but is completely clueless.

When I saw the American vice-president – I knew – THAT’S MY BUNNELBY!

http://politicalhumor.about.com/od/joebiden/a/bidenisms.htm

I gave a male Bunnelby the long name DumbJoeBiden after America’s gaff-prone vice president.DumbJoeBiden_by_Pokemon-X-and-Y

I would not want to burden you Otaku in the Akihabara who spend your time reading much more interesting material — so I will have to make the following disclaimers:

1. American vice-presidents, from Republicrat Dan Quyale to Democrican Al Gore have been much maligned in that country’s media.  Often the vice-president is made the butt of jokes made by America’s late-night talk show hosts – who themselves are some pretty big butts.  The name “Gaff” might also be appropriate for any Bunnelby – or any vice-president.

2. I do not talk politics or take political sides here on Denny Sinnoh’s Akihabara Starlight.  Kalos is filled with too much beauty to worry about American politicians.

i_can_t_stand_the_world_becoming_uglier

Darn it, now I sound like “Lysandre” …

That being said, the American vice-president has been in that country’s news several times in recent days.  Apparently he has insulted America’s NATO ally Turkey, as well as the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia — questioning that those countries were aiding the ISIS army.  He also called a group of his Jewish supporters “shylocks” (a derogatory term).  He inadvertently insulted victims of a Missouri tornado outbreak, then the student government at Harvard University.  … and that is all in just the last two weeks!

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/the-fix/wp/2014/10/06/why-this-joe-biden-gaffe-matters-more/

(Sorry for the politics, dear friends, you may have to wash your mind out with a little Puella Magi Madoka Magica now.)

If you ARE political, you can just name your befuddled Bunnelby a name for your opposing political human (Ex. “DumbHillary”, etc).  Again, these things are distasteful to me.  Bring on the Yuri manga instead.

bunny tea party

What? Political? This is my idea of a “Tea Party”.

I actually liked having DumbJoeBiden on my team.  I taught it some moves I do not usually use. He is one of the few Pokémon that I do not care about if it faints. I usually never let that happened to any other of my Pokémon.

In fact, I’m not sure if DumbJoeBiden really knows if he has fainted or not.

He sure likes his Poképuffs though.

bunny costume 2

Come here, Bunnelby, give your trainer a big hug … before I send you out on the Wonder Trade.
