MY MINAMI MINEGISHI TV PILOT PITCH

miichan photo1

I got to thinking since my last post about Miichan’s birthday. I like to fantasize while driving, so I composed a proposal/pitch to the FOX Network for my Minami Minegishi sitcom idea.

America loves a good “fish-out-of-water” story!

Miichan will play a Japanese college student who comes to America to study English at a major American University.

The show will be tentatively called “Learning Engrish” — or maybe something like “Please Speak Engrish!”. The network execs would probably want it to take place in California, but I think that there would be a bigger cultural contrast if the series took place in the American Midwest. (St. “Rouis” or somewhere like that). Besides, California already has a substantial Asian/Japanese population, so that would not be enough contrast.

Miichan’s TV character will also be called “Miichan”.  It is a great name, that sounds great when it will be yelled by the characters … MIIIIIIII – CHAN!!!!  Her last name will be different, and it has to be something that would sound funny to the American ear – something like “Fukyumama” could be the basis of a running  joke.

She will be an exchange student living with her Japanese-America aunt who is married to a (white, maybe Jewish) American.  I’m thinking someone like Billy Crystal as the uncle-in-law.

Every week, Miichan will innocently get into some type of trouble, due to a language or otherwise cultural misunderstanding.  This is where I will have to do some creative writing, but bear with me. Also, Miichan is a little troublemaker, and she has a sarcastic wit.  It would be great if Miichan could make fun of goofy aspects of American culture.  She would innocently point out how ILLOGICAL much of American culture is.  She could deconstruct various American “sacred cows” and tell us exactly how our Emperor is not wearing any clothes. (Ex. Why are US game shows so boring?)

Hilarious differences between traditional Japanese foods vs American cuisine could be jokes: “What are you eating Miichan?”  “Octopus tentacles … want some … I like how the little suction cups hold a little bit of the mollusk juice when you bite into them.”  Between the show’s segments and commercials there can be a real “Engrish” sign or image the audience can laugh at. Examples can be seen at this Engrish website linked here.  It must be kept in mind that such images are not making fun or East Asian language speakers, it is just that these things are often unintentionally hilarious.

In fact, one of the goals of the show would be to DISPEL MYTHS AND ASIAN STEREOTYPES!

The audience could also learn a little more about anime-manga-Idol culture from Japan as well, as Miichan would share her interests with her friends.  She might even have some fan service possiblities with her new American gal pals.  Again, completely innocent. There has not been an American show that features Japanese okatu culture yet, despite the growing popularity (Are you listening Hollywood?  I thought not. Originality is in short supply on American TV).

It would be great if the old Japanese grandmother character would have a catch-phrase running joke line. For example, whenever anything odd or bad would happen, the camera could zoom into the grandmother and she would mutter: “Damn Roosevelt…”. The joke being that anything bad have originated with the American president who ordered Japanese American citizens into internment camps.

Also, one of Miichan’s American wacky friends would clearly be a lesbian. Everyone knows it. Her family, the audience, the postman, etc. Everyone EXCEPT Miichan of course, who allows herself to get caught in racy situations with the American dyke. Her friend could give her backrubs, and just at the moment we think something will happen, Miichan is distracted in some hilarious way.  (Again, the writers will have to make the jokes.)

About FAN SERVICE: I know it might be a little derivative, but I think the uncle (Billy Crystal) could often catch a glimpse of the scantily-clad Minegishi-san.  Remember how in the old “King of the Hill” episodes, Hank Hill would walk in on Luanne in an undressed-sexy pose, and she would say “Hi Uncle Hank” much to Hanks consternation?

I’m thinking that in one episode, Miichan needs cash, and agrees to be a “nude model” at the University Art classroom.  Uncle Bill could find out about it,rush to the art department, only to see Miichan already on the pedestal. “Hi Uncle Billy-san”.  Then the uncle would look at the drawings made by the the (male) students, and they would all be just stick figures and the like.  They were just drawing her so they could look at her naked – get it?

Of course there would have to be a wacky neighbor.  Remember this is American television.

I’m thinking that each episode would end with Billy Crystal and Miichan sitting on a bench at a park or a mall.  They would be making fun of people as they walk by.  A lot of this would be ad-libbed.

So what do you think?  Would it be a good show?  Please comment and help me flesh out this pilot!

PS: Comedy is hard.  Failing that, maybe Miichan would be good in one of those crime CSI detective snoop shows!

Happy Birthday MIICHAN !!!

miichan in kimono c o a

Birthday wishes to Minami Minegishi  峯岸 みなみ, a.k.a. “Miichan” born November 15, 1992 in Tokyo. Japan is half a day ahead of me, so I want to be the first in my time zone to wish that little rascal a Happy Birthday. She has always been one of my favorites! She might not have her Uncle Denny’s eyes, but she has inherited my sharp, sarcastic sense of humor.  I could not be more proud of this effervescent young lady.

Remember her beautiful ballad from 2011? Please view “Watashi wa Watashi” in the optional HD.  It has an English translation.  It is very tender, and her gams are amazing. Miichan, don’t start crying, because then you will make me cry!

I know what y’all are thinking.  I never commented on that time that Miichan got in trouble in 2013.

MM broke the rules and spent the night with that dude that time.  Her mistake.  Her apology on the AKB Official Channel was worse than it needed to be.  She only had to say she was sorry for breaking the rules … shaving her head was her own idea. Look … I love Miichan. I will never post a photo of Miichan in that moment.  Instead please enjoy this slide show retrospective from better times.

The studio version of the song, with a montage of my young niece is linked here.

I think one of the reasons why she did it was because she has that acerbic – but funny – attitude of hers.  She has always been a “smarty pants” (American term), and sharply sarcastic wit. That she might “bite the hand that feeds her” (another American expression) would not be unexpected from Miichan. I think that is why she thought she could get away with it.

She was one of the founding members of AKB48, and I know that she is due to graduate soon.  She has the same sweet “baby face” today as she did in 2005.  Dynamite legs to boot.

Best Wishes Minegishi-san!  … because you can take it, I dedicate these sarcastic comments to you!

“Just because she spent the night at that guy’s apartment, does not mean that she had SEX with him… “

1.  “Maybe they just took turns taking tumble rides in the dryer.”

2.  “She’s a GIRL isn’t she? Maybe the man made her do a lot of ironing and it took longer than she thought.”

3. “Two words:  Yahtzee Tournament!”

4.  “Maybe they spent the night going through catalogs looking for a birthday present for Mr. Akimoto!”

She was demoted, but why Miichan was not kicked out of the group, I do not know.  Maybe it is time to move on in her career. I would follow her solo career.

I always thought that she would be a good sitcom actor — maybe in America.  I would love to write a pilot for Miichan to star in an American sitcom.  I have this idea about a Japanese English-major exchange student who gets in all kinds of trouble due to hilarious cultural misunderstandings.  She would basically just play herself — sweet, funny and sarcastic. The audience would also be able to learn about many the fun and strange (to Americans) aspects of Japanese culture.  I will title it “Learning Engrish”.  Who should the American actors be?

Happy Birthday.  I bow respectfully to you, dear young lady.

Of Sweets, Frills and Tea Parties: A Look at Japanese Lolita Fashion

I want to share this article on “Lolita” style fashion with my readers. Many of you are already aware of the style. I have intended to write a post about Lolita fashion for several weeks, but I have not been able to find the correct words to express my admiration for this fun and unique aspect of Japanese fashion.
Kei Cheung Photography has concisely said in her five sentences most of what I have been wanting to say!
http://keicheungphotography.wordpress.com/2014/11/12/lolita-fashion-styles/

There are other bloggers who I follow – and admire, who also write about Lolita fashion. I encourage my readers to check them out.

4. “liemzie”

… “Check them out” … Dear me, What a “vulgar” way to express my thoughts on this beautiful and elegant style. It seems I still have a lot to learn!

Kei Cheung Photography

A unique shoot with an equally unique (and diverse) form of
Japanese fashion called Lolita.  Originally inspired by rococo and Victorian-era styled dresses and attire, Lolita has become an
immensely popular youth fashion further accentuated by other
Japanese fashion influences, such as Visual Kei and Harajuku punk styles.  Although the fashion does follow some basic attire
guidelines, there is lots of liberty to how the style can be worn and accessorized.

Note, the fashion has no relation to the book written by Vladimir Nabokov or the general concept of Lolita in Western culture and Loli-con in Japanese culture.

Anthony Burgess reviews my new Watarirouka Hashiritai Farewell Concert DVD

“What’s it going to be then, eh?”

“This must be a real horrorshow film if you're so keen on my viddying it."

“This must be a real horrorshow film if you’re so keen on my viddying it.”

What are you spinning your warbles to these days droogies?  Johnny Zhivago? Heaven Seventeen? Well come with UNCLE! … Come and hear all PROPER!

My droog Denny lent me Watarirouka Hashiritai final concert DVD.  Oh, my brothers, it was gorgeousness and gorgeosity made flesh. I viddied that American thinking is for the gloopy ones and that the oomny ones use like inspiration and what Bog sends. For now it was lovely Watarirouka Hashiritai music that came to my aid.  Oh, it was wonder of wonders.

“It's funny how the colors of the real world only seem really real when you watch them on a screen.”

“It’s funny how the colors of the real world only seem really real when you watch them on a screen.”

Haruka Nagagawa crunched redgold under my bed, and behind my gulliver the sounds of Ayaka Kikuchi, Aika Oota and Mika Komori trumpeed three-wise silverflamed, and there by the door Kazumi Urano rolling through my guts and out again crunched like candy thunder.

Glazzies on Haruka only here: Viddy well brother … VIDDY WELL!

Mika Komori bored deep, like worms of like platinum, into the thick thick toffee gold and silver. I was in such bliss, my brothers. And then, a bird of like rarest spun heavenmetal, or like silvery wine flowing in a spaceship, gravity all nonsense now, came the Mayu Wananabe solo above all the other watarirouka strings, and those strings were like a cage of silk round my bed.

Mayus lips were like red, red kroovy ...

The lips of Mayu were like red, red kroovy …

Then, brothers, it came. Oh, bliss, bliss and heaven.  Like a GREAT BIRD – the solo by  Iwasa Misaki.

Oh, Bog in heaven what pretty pictures I dreamed

O, Bog in heaven what pretty pictures I imagined

I lay all nagoy to the ceiling, my gulliver on my rookers on the pillow, glazzies closed, rot open in bliss, slooshying the sluice of lovely sounds. Oh, it made me dream such pretty pictures, my brothers.

IT’S A SIN! The Watarirouka Hashiritai 7 to be disbanded? IT’S A SIN!!!!!!

But where I itty now, O my brothers, is all on my oddy knocky, where you cannot go. Tomorrow is all like sweet flowers and the turning vonny earth and the stars and the old Luna up there. … and all that cal.

Something organic that Bog tugs away free will?  Real horrorshow.

Cured?  I was cured alright.

Pokémon Nicknames: Tentacool and Tentacruel

jesus of cool

Today we will consider the two Jellyfish Pokémon.

Tentacool (in Japanese: メノクラゲMenokurage”) is a WATER-POISON dual type Pokémon.  It evolves into Tentacruel starting at level 30.

Tentacruel (in Japanese: ドククラゲDokukurage” ) is also a dual-type WATER-POISON Pokémon.  They can be either male, or female, but I can see no difference in appearance.

the_tentacool_tentacruel_papercraft_by_javierini

I nicknamed a Tentacool “Joe Cool” after the dress-up outfit sometimes worn by the Peanuts comic strip character Snoopy.

snoopy joe cool

You could name this jellyfish Pokémon “K-Y” but maybe that is just being too weird …

ky billboard

Tentacool has cool tentacles.  My idiot ex-brother-in-law once said they were “testicles”, but he was a stupid jackass … and I digress.

Tentacruel will use its tentacles and be cruel to you. … as “the Jesus of Cool” … Nick Lowe would attest: “You have to be cruel to be kind”.

I named one “NICK LOWE”, and  another “Cruel2BKind”.

I think that Man-O-War after the Portuguese Man-Of-War battleship, and the jellyfish named after it.

In general, I have fewer Female Tentacruel nicknames, but here is some good lady jellyfish cosplay:

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

I know that “Tentacle” videos are a part of Japanese Culture, but I will not go there today.

I hate encountering a Tentacruel.  They are a status problem just waiting to happen.  I do not even care about the training points gained by defeating them.

Tentacruels could just be named after mean people you might know – a mean boss or the like.  “MotherInLaw” is one possiblility. All the POISON moves, plus binding moves like WRAP are appropriate.

I have named some female Tentacruel “SoulSucker”. You kids may be too young for this, and hopefully you will never be in a bad relationship, where the other person, SUCKS ALL THE JOY OUT OF LIFE …  WHERE EVERYTHING YOU DO IS NEVER GOOD ENOUGH …  THEY TAKE EVERYTHING YOU HAVE, AND EVERYTHING YOU EVER WILL HAVE …  THEY TAKE YOUR GREATEST ASPIRATIONS … THEN CRUSH  ALL YOUR HOPES AND DREAMS … AND LEAVE YOU A HUDDLED, PATHETIC, SHIVERING MASS OF YOUR FORMER SELF …

Oh. … er … ah –hem … sorry.

Now where did I put that jelly?

KIMONOS ON MONDAY (Week #26): Iwasa Misaki “Selfies” in Kimono

Always with the "selfies" this one ...

Always with the “selfies” this one …

Iwasa Misaki:  What a VOICE!  What a BEAUTY!  I love the Enka-performances of the great Iwasa Misaki.  I have noticed that she takes a lot of “selfies”.  There must be a lot waiting-around backstage.  Next time, maybe someone else can take the photos, so we can see more of her beautiful kimonos.  … and I know just the guy!

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

These are two “Enka” singing performances by Wasamin from earlier this year.  She wears amazing kimonos in both of these. Turn up the HD full screen!

In this last video, which again features Wasamin in a beautiful kimono, she sings the national anthem before a Hiroshima Carp baseball game (April 2014).

Then she throws out the first pitch in Kimono …

No …  “Jose” did not see anything : )

America’s MLB All-Stars are going to Japan!

mlb in japan

MLB All-Stars to Japan!  I love the American sport of baseball.  I love Japan.  Put the two together and you have the subject of today’s post.

I am still reeling from the great postseason we had this fall … of course any post-season without the NY Yankees is a great postseason!

(Yankees: It is only out of respect for your retired captain, Derek Jeter that I am not sitting here going NYAH NYAH NYAH NYAH NYAH !!!!!)

It may be all over for baseball this year in America, however there will be a series of games played in Japan. A team of (American) Major League Baseball players will tour Osaka, Tokyo, Sapporo, Okinawa and Koshien and play against Japanese teams.  Here is the announcement link.

http://m.mlb.com/news/article/100801102/mlb-roster-for-japan-all-star-series

… and a Wiki link here.

The MLB team roster is linked here:

I love these type of exhibition games.  I always cheer for Japan in the World Baseball Classic (the next one is in 2017).  It will be great to see the MLB stars match up against Japan’s teams.

I am hoping that someday, there will be a true “World Series” where the MLB World Series Champion would play in a playoff series against Japan, Korea, and Cuba’s champion teams.

One word of advice for Japan however. MLB baseball players are not familiar with Japanese customs and language.  Please give these guys a break.

jose altuve goes to japan

Whenever possible, please speak the language of American MLB teams

Pokémon Nicknames: Vivillon

gibson flying V

Flying “V”

Vivillon (in Japanese: ビビヨンViviyon” ) is a dual-type BUG and FLYING type Pokémon. It is known as the “scale” Pokémon.  It evolves from Spewpa starting at level 12. It is the final form of Scatterbug.

vivillon evolutions

I have caught and named several Vivillon.  The one I caught and trained for my journey through Kalos was named “Flying V”.  I named it after a 1967 Gibson “Flying V” guitar (I have had my eye on).

I also suggest the name “Volaré” named after Dean Martin’s famous song. The lyrics remind me of a XY  Sky battle as you will read below:

Volaré means “to fly” in Italian. Lyrics like “your love has given me wings” are especially fitting. The Italian: “Nel blu dipinto di blu” is the actual name of the song – meaning “In the sky, painted blue”.  It would be great to have a blue-patterned Vivillon. Great song, … and every time I listen to Dean Martin I always get hungry for spaghetti.  The memories are still vivid … but I digress.  “Vivid Calores” could also be a name!

Volaré is also good if you like the Plymouth automobile.  They were popular with the Italian-American kids I grew up with.  There used to be a joke in high school, where guys would say “There was a big recall for the Plymouth Volare … yeah, whenever the engine stalls, an Italian chick automatically jumps into the backseat.”  Now look, when I was a young adult, the vivid colors of my world were a lot like the movie “Goodfellas” … and  I digress once again …

Lovingly called

Lovingly called a little “_ _ _ _-mobile”

A French language (Kalos) fitting name would be “Vichyssoise” – the potato and leeks soup which is served cold in those super-expensive French restaurants. No youngsters, I kid you not.  A recipe is linked here.

I have also used the name “Versailles” as in the Palace at Versailles (take the tour here).

the palace

Of course, X & Y veterans are already familiar with the Kalos-region palace.

I have also named them “Vermilion” after the brilliant red-color pigment originally made from the powdered mineral Cinnabar (another possible name).  The color is widely used in Chinese art and lacquerware.  In fact, the color is sometimes termed “Chinese Red” – which is another possible nickname!

Notice how the artistic eye is drawn directly toward the Vermilion-colored garment.

Notice how the artistic eye is drawn directly toward the Vermilion color of the garment.  You might need a little more material for a kimono however.

I used a Premier Ball to catch a female Vivillon, and named it “Kimono” because — well — I love kimonos, as you know.  I think that the pattern would make a nice kimono.

I have also named a male Vivillon “Vernon” after my friend in 6th grade, and also for “Mt. Vernon” home of George Washington.

“Viva la __” might also be a good nickname.  Alternateively: “VivaLes___” , etc. You can choose what is the blank, whatever you want to “Viva la” to with your last five letters.

It is unfortunate that we cannot (as yet) re-name Pokémon, as you could name them in relation to what regional wing pattern they have.  Vivillon’s pattern depends on the real-world geographic location set in the game where the Pokémon was caught.

vivillon_plush__high_plains_pattern

I received a High Plains Pattern Vivillon via the GTS, but some idiot named it “NO, SORRY”.

There 20 known patterns.  It would be fun to collect and then name them something special!

vivillion fashion

Poor Vivillon: The National Pokedex number for Vivillion is 666. Which may be off-putting for those of the Christian persuasion, as 666 is the number that represents “the Beast”.

pokemon_vivillon_is_number_666

According to Christian mythology: during the latter days before the end of the world, Satan the Devil will send the anti-Christ to Earth in order to trick the gullible population into worshiping him,  — after which he will destroy us all … (No … that is not Obama, you joker, …No! …oh, you…).

pokemon vivillion condems you all

If there are over 700 Pokémon, someone had to be #666, so at least it is this very special, and very appealing Pokémon.

I’m as happy as a schoolgirl (Part II)

I’m as happy as a schoolgirl again !

wh7best cover

I am all agog … like I’m on eggnog

… and also very happy with my Watarirouka Hashiritai  farewell concert DVDs I have been watching.  Then yesterday I finally received by double-CD “best of Watarirouka Hashiritai ” album from Japan!  It has all the hits, plus some of the solo singles the members made while in the group.  Of course most of those are by Mayu Watanabe.

It reminds me why they were always my favorite sub-unit of AKB48 (see link). The songs are so sweet, fun and cute.  I loved listening to it in the car today. It makes my daily commute through all the bad neighborhoods* I have to drive through so much more enjoyable!

One thing though: I probably have never purchased a record that is this high-pitched and squeaky — at least not since I had The Chipmunks” back when I was in second grade.

This example is pretty squeaky — PRETTY and SQUEAKY!

Got me thinking, you know, the WH7 DO do sound a little bit like “The Chipettes”.

Perhaps in the studio, it went something like this:

Akimoto-san: “Sounds great girls, but Mayu – you were a little flat

Mayu: (not paying attention)

Akimoto-san: “Mayu …”

Mayu: (looking off into distance)

Akimoto-san: (irritated) Mayu!

Mayu: (still not listening)

Akimoto-san:  MAYU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mayu: Hai !

 Ha Ha. … No.

I love them.

* Get out of the way you alcoholics — I have Mayuyu : )

KIMONOS ON MONDAY (Week #25): The art prints of Haruyo Morita

Haruyo Morita4ba6b397de3f30f6080d9b9624c856cc

This week, I want to share some of the art prints available from Japanese artist Haruto Morita.  She creates beautiful images, many of which feature lovely Japanese women in kimono!

She is originally from Kita-Katsushika County, Saitama Prefecture, Japan.

Morita-san now lives in on the New South Wales coast at Korora, in Australia: “where the light and climate are perfect for her work.” (from her web bio page).

Also from her web page bio: “Her work can best be described as a contemporary representation of the traditional Ukiyo-e, and ranging from the Heian to Edo and Meiji periods.

Her web site is linked here.

… or this way http://www.haruyomorita.com.au/

Please enjoy this small slide show of some of work.  Better yet, visit her website and order a print!
