Denny Sinnoh's "Akihabara Starlight"

Billions of these Macs were sold!

Taillow ( in Japanese: スバメ  “Subame”) is a NORMAL-FLYING -type Pokémon. It evolves into Swellow (in Japanese: オオスバメ Ohsubame”) starting at level 22, where it remains a NORMAL-FLYING type.

I named a Taillow “McWings” after the chicken wing item that used to be sold at McDonalds Restaurants.

Also, I named it “McWings” after Paul McCartney and Wings, the band that “Macca” (Paul McCartney’s nickname!) formed after the Beatles broke up. There was a famous Creem Magazine cover in 1976 which had Paul McCartney dressed as someone from the McDonalds corporation (cartoon photo above). The joke was that Paul McCartney’s band was super-popular, but critics thought that Paul was becoming too commercial, and simply writing songs to sell a product — that is, millions of records , the way McDonalds sold millions of burgers.  I digress however …

Open a box of Macca “Silly Love Songs” here … Note that the guy in the blond Afro in the video below is actually Denny in 1976! … but I digress once more …

I keep the name even after it evolves.  I have also named some Swellow “McCartney”. I have named some female Swellow “Lovelace” but I am embarrassed to admit it. There was a Rodney Dangerfield movie where a sexy lady asked him what his favorite bird was, and he answers “the Swallow” then leers as he always did.

Other possible names: Swell Fellow.  I name some Taillow “Kamikaze” (with two star symbols at each end).  If you teach it the “Brave Bird” move, it becomes reminiscent of Japan’s World War II pilots, or the alcoholic drink popular with naïve college students.  “Hitchcock” might be good, because it is a movie reference (“The Birds”), and a tough bird may be a tough cock.

I think that Taillow is a lot tougher than most players give it credit for.  I raised the Attack-stat on mine way up, and taught it moves like “Steel Wing”.

I did not worry about a Special Move, so that saved EV training points.  It has “Guts” ability, if it is hit with a status problem, that just boosts the Attack stat!  I raised this McWings in the original Sapphire, and transferred it all the way through other games to Pokemon Y.  I am raising a new chick in Omega Ruby however …

“How can I tell you about my loved one …”

I have also used the name “Paris London“. Because these are the two cities in “A Tale of Two Cities” by Charles Dickens. Get it a “Taillow of two cities”.  Ha Ha.

I think that “Hawkwind” would be a good name – after the great space-metal rock band that Lemmie was in.

What is your nickname for your Taillow or Swellow? Please comment!

  1. I love swellow when it is my opponent. Why? It flies beautifully with its wings stretched out! It really looks graceful.
