Denny Sinnoh's "Akihabara Starlight"

Although I am not a “hacker” I would like to share this recent post by my friend and fellow WordPress blogger “The Penguin”.

I am also concerned that WordPress has been changing its interface to a less usable form. I hate the new Stats page, and I never use it. Apparently you cannot use the “classic” text editor anymore, as Mr. Penguin-san explains here.

One of the distressing things about getting older is that change occurs. In fact the rate of change seems to be increasing with the passage of time. So often these changes are not improvements however. Things are just different, not BETTER.

… and by the way … Where are my car keys? …

… and how do you work this damn thing? … why does it have to be so damn complicated? …

… and What? What is those … MONKEYS? Turn that junk off.

… can’t I get just a HALF a cup of coffee?

… you kids get off my lawn …

… where’s my car keys?

Kids: If you ever find yourself referring to someone as a “whippersnapper” you know you are in trouble. You kids may not have to worry about that so much yet … yet you may want to use this method in order to use the old editor. I sure wish I could : (

… where’s my car keys?

`The Penguin' says...

As of yesterday, the “Edit in classic mode” button for editing posts has disappeared without notice, and worse yet, they have no intention on bringing it back.

I don’t know about you, but I prefer to edit using the classic interface. If you’re on and prefer to use the classic interface like I do, you’re in luck. I just wrote a user script to force a redirect to the classic interface.

To use the script, you’ll need an add-on for your browser that will run user scripts. Greasy Fork has a list of these add-ons; just install one for your browser if you don’t already have one. Once you have the add-on, click “Install” below:

Alternatively, you can go to the script’s Greasy Fork page and install it from there.
The script’s source is on GitHub.

What is a user script?

  1. Hmmmm. I still use the classic editor. Whenever WordPress tries to lead me to its new text editor, I just go back to the classic one. Same with the stats page.

    • I think the new text editor and stats page were made for people blogging from their cell phones. Of course back in my day, we never did that … let me tell you a story from back in … (falls asleep, nurse comes over to check Denny’s pulse)

    • You should also check out the Penguin’s blogs as well, Ari-chan. Like you he is also a Filipino-Canadian, and like me he is a big fan of Japanese singer Hanako Oku : )

      • Just checked out his blog. His posts are too difficult for me to understand with all of those computer language. Ahem. But I’m glad to know that there are other Filipino-Canadian bloggers out there. Thanks.

      • Yes, those computer posts are mostly lost on me, and it is hard to make my sarcastic-jackass comments about them. (Not that I ever do that)

His Hanako Oku posts are very good, and it was by finding his Oku blog which led me to being a WordPress Blogger.

      • Hahahaha!
Indeed, I never seen you making “sarcastic-jackass” comments.

I just realized that he also has other posts besides the computer-language ones. It’s just that they’re the first ones that I saw and immediately concluded that his blog is all about these things I don’t even begin to understand.

  2. Ah, the case of the ambiguous pronoun. The “it” there refers to the button, not the editor. I should edit that. I don’t think they’ll take away the classic editor because it’s part of core WordPress, but they’ll try to keep pushing us to use the new one.
