Pokémon Nicknames: Mareanie and Toxapex

“Alola cousins! Do you have time for one more walk down to the fishing hole? Just watch where you step.”

Mareanie (in Japanese: ヒドイデ “Hidoide”) is a Poison and Water dual-type Pokémon introduced in the Alola Region (Generation VII). Mareanie was one of the hardest Pokémon to catch in Sun and Moon. You had to fish for Corsola, then wait for the coral Pokémon to call for help.

Mareanie evolves into Toxapex (in Japanese: ドヒドイデ  “Dohidoide” ) starting at level 38, where it remains a Poison and Water dual-type. (Reference: Bulbapedia.)

Mareanie and Toxapex are modeled after poisonous sea urchins or spiny starfish. These echinoderms* are sea animals common in rocky inter-tidal pools.

My favorite name for Mareanie is “Poison Pen” after the phrase “poison pen letter”. Once upon a time (before the Internet) people would write and send letters to each other through the mail. A poison pen letter is a type of malicious hate mail sent to a recipient for the specific purpose of upsetting them. These letters were always sent anonymously. Sometimes a letter would be sent to a third party detailing how terrible another person is. No one writes anonymous poison pen letters anymore — as trolls have the anonymity of the Internet to malicious harass another. On that note, “Malicious” might be a good name for this poison-type.

Some Sea Urchins have venom, and many have sharp, prickly spines. Thus, “Spiny Norman” (after the Monty Python reference) may be a good name for a male.

Other, “prickly” names could be used, such as “Pin Cushion”. “AccuPuncher” after the Chinese “acupuncture” medical technique (which is actually supposed to rid you of toxins).

Blue-Meanie” after the characters in the Yellow Submarine movie.

Mean Gene” after the sports name given to anyone named Eugene.

After evolution, then … um … Toxapex?  (Denny scoffs) It sounds like a feminine hygiene product!

(insert cricket noises here)

Aw, come on … Don’t you get it – the name sounds like “Tampax” or “Kotex” … only toxic.

Nice.

You could probably just name it “Kotex” or perhaps “Toxic Shock” after the medical condition linked to super absorbent tampons.

If you want to make a snarky comment on the ongoing “Battle of the Sexes” you could name your male Toxapex “Masculinity” after that toxic masculinity phrase that sophomore sociology majors use to blame their own failures on. Conversely, you could name a female Toxapex “Feminism” after the toxic feminism encountered so often by frustrated STEM majors.

What is the name of your toxic little sticker? Please comment!

Pokémon Nicknames: Caterpie, Metapod and Butterfree

Pokémon Nicknames:

Caterpie (in Japanese: キャタピー  “Caterpie”), Metapod (in Japanese: トランセル “Trancell”), and Butterfree (in Japanese: バタフリー “Butterfree”) are all Bug-type Pokémon. (Source: Bulbapedia.) Butterfree becomes a dual type Bug/Flying, and it very easy to level up. You only need to level up Caterpie to level 7 to make it a Metapod, and it evolves again to Butterfree at the low-level of 10.

(Denny imitating Tony Soprano). “Levelin’ up deese bugs? – Fugghetaboudit!”

You can encounter these bugs in your Generation 1 game, and you also encounter them in the first patch of grass you visit in Pokémon Sun/Moon and the new Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon games. Caterpie is usually an early member of most player’s team. “String Shot” is a useful move in the early game.

Caterpie is a Caterpillar, but it looks like a cute “Sweetie Pie”, so you could use that name. A sweet little munching Caterpillar, yeah, that will work. Of course, if you are a dark, “edgy” kind of player, you might like the name “PewDiePie” after the famous YouTube creator. Caterpie’s antennae looks like a big red letter “Y”, so you could name it “Ate-at-the-Y” after the joke where your friend asks you if you are hungry, and you reply “I already ate at the Y”. (Because you are a paid member of the local YMCA.)

My favorite name for Metapod is “Fuhgetabodit”. Remember that you only have twelve spaces for a name, so one cannot use the original Fugghetaboudit – which is an Italian-American slang contraction of the phrase “forget about it”. There are different ways to spell the word, but there is only one correct way to say it. Here, try it yourself:

Ha! An upper-class British guy trying to sound like an Italian-American from Jersey. If you are like me, and you use the Wondertrade a lot, you receive a lot of weak Caterpies and Metapods. I like to send over a Metapod, and the Wondertrade captions says “Denny sent over … Fuhgetabodit”. Ha. … as in you can forget about receiving a special or useful Pokémon this time. Also, you can fuhgetabodit — because with a very small move set, Metapod really is not very good at battling (Insert lame joke about the move “Harden” here). I also like to use “Hard Knocks” as in “the school of hard knocks”.

Denny contemplates this joke … fuhgetabodit!

Butterfree’s name is based on the saying, the book and the movie Butterflies Are Free”. Consider these names for Butterfree:

96 Tears” after the famous Mysterians song in the 1960s — because Butterfree has compound eyes with 96 parts.  “Y.U. Buggin”  – after what my friend who imitates the “rap” dialect sometimes says. “Margarine” because it is BUTTER-FREE, get it! “Flapper” as in the 1920s ladies fashion style. “Effect” after “the Butterfree effect“. Ha, tricked you.

Butterfree’s eyes somewhat resemble those of Venonat, so you may consider my names for it linked here.

Please enjoy the Butterfree cosplay!

I wouldn’t mind using some butter right now!

What is the name for your hard little bug? Please comment!

Pokémon Nicknames: Wishiwashi

Wishiwashi (in Japanese: ヨワシ  “Yowashi”) is a Water-type Pokémon introduced in Pokémon Sun and Moon’s Alola Region (Generation VII). This Pokémon does not evolve, but it can change forms with its “Schooling Ability” — — if it has reached level 20. (Source: Bulbapedia)

One would have to agree that the sad-eyed fish is much more intimidating in the schooling form. However, if its HP is lowered to less than half during battle, it will revert to its regular form.

Wishiwashi is a small fish. I have used names like “Minnow-Soda” (after Minnesota) or “SS Minnow” (after the boat in Gilligan’s Island).

Healthy people eat a lot of fish, thus food or “diner” type names could be used. ChickenOfSea” after the popular brand of tuna.  “Starkist” is another tuna name.SorryCharlie” would work because of Wishiwashi’s sad face. Perhaps Wishiwashi is related to sardines — thus “Sardinia” after the Italian island. Name a female Wishiwashi “AuntChovey” after anchovies, which are part of a good anti-pasta. “Baccala”  is Italian salted cod — and the name of a Sopranos character.  I think he ended up swimming with the fishes. Of course don’t forget “Tartar“. Actually I eat very little fish these days. Fish is not fish to me unless it is breaded, deep fried and covered with cheddar and tartar sauce.

Wishiwashi looks like some type of smelt, so names like “Smelts” or “Smelt+Dealt” come to mind. The phrase whoever-smelt-it-dealt it” was common on my middle school bus. You could name one “Smells Fishy” and the like. It is always a hoot to give your fish a funny name, then send it out over the Wondertrade — “Denny sent over A-Fishy-Smell … take good care of A-Fishy-Smell”. Ha. That would be hilarious. It reminds me of the famous quotation about smelts:

“There are only two things that smell like fish … and one of them is fish.”

One of my favorite fish names has always been “Odoroyo Fish” the GREAT 1980s cover song updated by the Japanese idol group Tsuri Bit. Previously, I had only named Barboach/Whiscash “Odoroyo”. Here is a coincidence:  I used to name Whiscash “WishyWashy” because of the “W” on its head — but that is another story.

Another fun fish name is “Mr. Limpett” after “The Incredible Mr. Limpett” movie. I loved all of Don Knotts‘ movies when I was a kid. For more nostalgia you could name a Wishiwashi “SplishSplash” after the Bobby Darin song.

1Fish 2Fish” is after the Dr. Suess’ children’s book “One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish”. Of course Wishiwashi is blue, but if you name it “Blue Fish” most would not make the connection. Other bookish or “school of fish” type names are appropriate: “Schools Out” after the great Alice Cooper song … or “Back2School” after the Rodney Dangerfield film. Do you what is scary to a middle school student? These “Back to school” ads you see in print ads in JULY! It is like they are mocking the kids that school will start in just a few weeks.

Because of Wishiwashi’s sad looking face, I thought of “My-Sad-Clown“. Also Wishiwashi’s frown reminds me of actor Sean Penn’s grin. Penn, (perhaps the stupidest person on the face of the Earth, — unless you count Russell Brand) often makes that frowny-face of disgust in his movies.

Looks like Droopy does not like what is on the seafood menu …

I named the first Wishiwashi that I caught “Droopy” because of its drooping eyes. That Pokémon is one drooping, flaccid fish. That led me to “LakeFlaccid” as a play on the movie named “Lake Placid”. Droopy looks like he could use some Cialis. “Viagra Falls” is a related name, based on the famous Niagara Falls.

There is a phrase often repeated by feminists that goes “A woman needs a man … like a fish needs a bicycle.”

I strongly disagree with that view. Jewish author Dennis Prager’s has said (and I paraphrase) that men and women need each other. I agree with that. Certainly a man does not feel complete without the love of a good woman. A woman needs a man just the same. It is true that living alone would be better than getting into a bad relationship. However, to say that men and women do not need each other is … well … STUPID.

Will this fish end up old, alone and bitter?

Readers: I apologize for the lack of Pokémon cosplay photos for this post. It seems Wishiwashi is just too new for Pokémon otaku to have created full Wishiwashi costumes yet. All I could find were these fish-patterned panties. Sorry.

Forget the bike, sweetie I just took something to put me in “schooling form” all weekend!

What is your favorite fish name? Please comment!

Pokémon Nicknames: Dhelmise

Ahoy cousins! Aye, I hope yer not be afeared of the deep, as I recon me names for this ship’s ghost …

Ha – I bet I sounded just like one of those “Pirates of The Caribbean” movie characters. I think that they have a new movie … or something coming out … or recently. I really don’t follow that series. I heard it was going to be “Rated R” … because it is about pirates … and …  see … and pirates say “AHHRR” a lot … and hoo boy.

Dhelmise (in Japanese: ダダリン  “Dadarin”) is a dual-type GHOST and GRASS-type Pokémon introduced for the Alola Generation VII (source: Bulbapedia). Dhelmise is genderless, and does not evolve into or from any other known Pokémon. Basically, Dhelmise is the rusty anchor of a sunken ship, combined with the ships (steering) wheel — and covered in seaweed. One of its eyes appears to be a compass. (A full description from Bulbapedia is linked here.) Although Dhelmise is ghost and grass (seaweed) it is surprisingly not a WATER-type It can learn moves such as “Whirlpool”.  This is appropriate, as I see Dhelmise trying to pull foes down to a watery grave. Ha Ha — or as I should say — ARRR … Another odd characteristic about this Pokémon is that its signature ability is “Steelworker” which boosts STEEL-type moves by 50%. That makes sense, as an anchor is made of iron. Thus a good move set for this Pokémon should include Ghost, Grass, Water and Steel moves.

My favorite name for this ghost Pokémon is “Hard-To-Port“. I envision that this phrase was the last order the doomed ship’s captain gave, just before the vessel wrecked, sending all hands down to Davy Jones’ Locker. (No, not that Davy Jones, silly.)

Sailing-type names are cute. Do you know your port-side from your aft?

No, ya scurvy dogs —  I said “Fire the aft cannon — the AFT!!!”

Another fun nickname might be based on the old Village People song “In The Navy”  linked here.

When you think of sailors you think of the various nautical-themed tattoos that they decorate themselves with. Tattoos are really not my thing personally, but I still admire the art.

(Denny humming/singing):  “In the navy — Yes, you can sail the seven seas … In the navy — Yes, you can put your mind at ease … In the navy…”

Dhelmise may be hard for Alola adventurers to find.  A how-to video from YT is linked here — just don’t use a Quick Ball like that guy, because Quick Balls look stupid, unless your Pokémon is actually blue-and yellow in color. Don’t get me started.

So long for now cousins —  or at least “until the sea gives up its dead …”

Note to my Readers: Since my last post a couple of weeks ago, I have gone over a QUARTER MILLION views on this blog. Take THAT Dave Barry!

Pokémon Nicknames: Crabrawler and Crabominable

Alola cousins! After a hard day of battles and trials, the last thing you would want is to have your dinner fight you back!

wiseguyehbef7843ab8179f880b56476cd74fdf65dcbe68e3e92ebb029ec0f71b49487dd1_1

Crabrawler (in Japanese: マケンカニ  “Makenkani”) is a FIGHTING-type Pokémon introduced in Alola. (Reference: Bilbapedia) You often encounter a Crabrawler when you try to pick up the cache of berries near certain palm trees. The Crabrawler jumps up, because you are messing with his lunch …

crab-p1hqbe7

… but the trick is on him, as you can make this crab YOUR lunch!

crabimg_0341

crabsimg_0342

Crabrawler has a very special evolution. This Gen Seven crab evolves into Crabominable (in Japanese: ケケンカニ  “Kekenkani”) only when leveled up at Mount Lanakila.

busterevolvesimg_0354

It then becomes a FIGHTING and ICE dual type. Ice makes sense – as Snowcrabs are a popular seafood. Crabonimable is likely named after the “abominable snowman” of Yeti legend I guess.

thebouncerimg_0350

My favorite Crabrawler name is “The Bouncer” after “Benny the Bouncer” a song by Emerson, Lake and Palmer. It is the tale of a fearsome pub bouncer who finally meets his end. A YourTube user has posted a nice annotated version of it here.

The song is a departure from other ELP progressive-rock songs … ahem …  as it is short by prog rocker standards for one thing … plus Greg Lake sings it in a Cockney accent. Here let me ‘ave a go at my Cockney accent:

Denny: “Sidney grabbed a ‘achet … buried it in Benny’s ‘ead”.

I know what you are thinking: “Denny, how did you learn to imitate the British Cockney dialect so well?” My answer: Andy Capp comic strips.

‘ello gov’nah!  Sure. I can see how Crabrawler could be a rough-and-tumble, rugby-playing, Guinness-slurping, pub bloke. Quick to fight, but also likely to have a beer and a game of darts with you after.

andycapp2-11-1961

I suggest using “punch” based nicknames. Crabrawler has the “Iron Fist” ability which powers up punching moves.

misc-crabs-img_0358

I’ve used “BubblesLaRue” for females. “Crab Roux” makes a good lunch. The unfertilized eggs of a crab are called “roe“, which is considered a delicacy like caviar. So you can name it “Crab Roe“, or even “Roe Wade”, which would always causes a good fight. “Punch-N-Judy” after the famous puppet show “Punch and Judy”. “Punchline” after the good part of a joke. I think that this Alola Pokémon might be asked “How about a Hawaiian Punch”?

Raging Crab” or some derivation — after the boxing movie “Raging Bull”. “Let’s Dance” after the David Bowie song, and the euphemism for “Let’s fight”.

Cruisin’” as in the expression “You are Cruising for a bruising!”.

The Contender” is a classy reference  – after Marlon Brando’s famous line in “Requiem for a Heavyweight” … “I coulda been a CONTENDER! … now I’m just a bum.” Yes, we mediocrities always think about what coulda been – had we lived up to our potential. “Palooka” is another name used there by Brando referring to washed-up boxers.

Some players use “Rocky” movie themed names. Crabrawler has this one beat-up eye, and does looks a little like Sylvester Stallone saying “Yo Adrian”.

You can use other crab or crustacean names I have previously suggested for other Pokémon.  Here is hoping that my names will lead you to create your own crab-like names

Pokémon Nicknames: Mudbray and Mudsdale

givemudbrayaname

ALOLA  COUSINS!!!

Mudbray (in Japanese: ドロバンコ  “Dorobanko”) is a GROUND-type Pokémon first found in the Alola Region. It is termed the “Donkey Pokémon”. It appears to us as a donkey (aka a “jackass”) or mule. Mudbray evolves into Mudsdale — the “Draft Horse Pokémon”  (in Japanese: バンバドロ  “Banbadoro”) at level 30, where it remains a GROUND-type. (Bulbapedia reference here.)

Could Mudbray be a mule too? Not technically, since they call it the “donkey Pokémon”. Donkeys, burros and mules all share some resemblance in form however, so I will still use “mule” type names. A mule is produced when a male donkey is bred with a female horse (mare). Another mule-like animal the “Hinny,” is produced when you breed a male horse (stallion)  to a female donkey.

mudbray_and_mudsdale_could_breed

Did anyone ever try breeding a male Mudbray with a female Mudsdale, or a female Mudbray with a male Mudsdale? Go try that at Paniolo Ranch!

Mules are bred to be smaller, but stronger and more durable than a horse. Mules are less obstinate than a donkey. Donkey’s are hard to get along with. There is a reason why donkeys are called “Jackasses”. Jackasses are narrow minded, and they will not listen.  Mules are thus a better choice to be a pack-animal. However, hybrid mules are usually sterile and unable to breed offspring.

breedingprogramgonewrong

When breeding goes wrong at the Paniolo Ranch

Knoxville” might be a good Mudboy name, after actor Johnny Knoxville who starred in the “Jackass” movie and reality TV show of the same name. I never saw it, let alone ever “tried it at home.” Apparently American audiences thought it was hilariously funny to watch people fall down. Also, lot of people in Knoxville, TN also like to get “down and dirty” like a ground-type should.

They call her “Bucky Becky”. Just be careful with the teeth there Becky.

Democrat” could be another good donkey name, as the jackass is the symbol of America’s Democratic Party. (Off topic: Elephants are the symbol of the Republican Party, so you could name your Phanpy or Donphan  a GOP themed name, then have them all battle in one big double battle.)

democratsarejackasses

... and it had such potential!

… it lost, but it had such potential!

A great name for a donkey is “Quixote” after Don Quixote the story, the play and the movie. Perhaps “Donkey Oatey” or some variation. Go ahead, and dream the impossible dream.

It used to be that the Pokémon Name Censor would not let you use the letters “ass” – not even in names with the word “grass” as part of them. Apparently this has changed, so “Ass” names will now work, particularly within your own Sun and Moon  game. Suggestions: “AllAbotD.Ass” or some variation.

Sometimes the law ... is an ASS!

Sometimes the law … is an ASS!

Teachers might like to use names like “ASS=U+ME” after the old saying – What happens when you assume?you make an ASS out of YOU and ME. Ha Ha.

cutedonkeysassume

Eddie” after Eddie Murphy who played “Donkey” in the Shrek movies.

Not Eddy Murphy

Not Eddie Murphy

My Fav Honky” or “Favrit Honky” is good, if you remember the line in the Steve Martin novelty record “King Tut” (linked here). The record was actually not funny at all, but when he performed it on Saturday Night Live or in concert, it was much, much better with Mr. Martin making his wild-and-crazy Egyptian arm movements.

stevemartin-king-tut

“Buried with a Donkey – He’s my favorite Honky – King Tut ! ”

The name “Brayboy” is a play on the words”bray” and  “playboy” because jackasses do bray like — well — like jackasses. Plus, most “playboys” are narcissistic jackasses. They think they are “Plow Boys” though.

mulesimg_0336

Sometimes you can base a name on which “Hidden Power” it can learn. For example, “Assisgrass” learned “grass type” as its Hidden Power.

Other famous donkeys include “Eeyore” from Winnie The Poo, “Benjamin” from George Orwell’s “Animal Farm” and the funny sounding “Baba Looey” from the old Hanna-Barbara cartoon Quick Draw McGraw.

You could play with Burro names, like “BurroSupreme” for Taco Bell lovers. “Paco Packo” or similar — since burros are good pack animals.

mulesimg_0339

The name “Forty Acres” or “40 Acres” would work for a mule, after the famous American expression regarding the lost “American Dream” — “Where is MY 40 acres and a mule?”

I like the name “Okey Dokey” for a donkey or a draft horse.

okeydokeylokeypinkieoie

Mudsdale is a “draft horse” or workhorse, bred to pull a wagon load. Such horses were not bred to be racehorses, however some racehorses are bred to be “mudders” — able to run fast in muddy tracks. Thus, you should breed your female Mudsdale to be an effective ground type. “His mudder was a mudder” is a common phrase for bookies handicapping a race. Thus you should use a mudder-type name — I suggest “Tuff Mudder” or “Mudder Effer“.

mudbrayimg_0332

Mudsdale’s signature move is a kicking move: “High Horsepower“. Kicking-type names like “Kick-Grass” — or horsepower type names like “500 Ponies”  may work. “Horse Sense” might make sense.

A good name for a horse is “Hot-to-Trot“. Oh —  and you may want to view my suggestions for Ponyta and Zebstrika for other equus suggestions. I would like to someday compose an all-Equus Pokémon team.  You could have Clydesdale, Mudbray, Rapidash, and Ponyta. Plus, Zebstrika and Blitzle could be there too.

Mudsdale also appears to have dreadlocks or a braided mane.  You could try “braid” type names — but I can’t think of many.

Found on Deviantart website. I might name a Mudsdale

Found on Deviantart website. I might name a Mudsdale “Greco-Roman” now.

You could base names on the large hairy hooves this horse breed has — “Horseplop for example, after the sound of hooves clopping down the road. “Cloggs” might resonate, if you like that type of shoes.

I would like to use the name “Kadiddlehopper” after the famous Red Skelton character Clem Kadiddlehopper .  Unfortunately there are too many letters. Maybe just “Kadiddle” would be a fun name for a plucky horse companion. The Mudsdale which I raised to battle the Alola Champion was called “Diddly Doo” — after the phrase made famous by Simpson’s neighbor Ned Flanders.

Mudsdale is obviously based on a “Clydesdale” horse. We all know about Clydesdales from watching Budweiser beer’s Super Bowl commercials. When I was just a kid, and my teenage friends and I would illegally sneak and drink beer, we would call them “Butt-weipers.” (Everything was funnier back then.) Thus, Clydesdale names might be  “Clyde” or “Bud Wiser” for males.  You could use horse names like “Happy Hoofer” (after the “Happy Hooker” books and advice column) for female Mudsdales.

The late TV announcer Ed McMahon  was long associated with the Clydesdales. He was also famous for his drinking. When I used to see the McMahon-narrated Clydesdale commercial of the horses pulling a big wagon packed tall with cases of beer —  I would joke “Yup, they are on the way to Ed McMahon’s garage.”

McMahon was Johnny Carson’s sidekick – or second banana – but he had a great jovial  laugh which made him agreeable to everyone. So name your Pokémon “McMahon”, “HiYo!” or “Sidekick”, especially since Mudsdale has strong kicking moves.

You know, I can do a pretty good Ed McMahon imitation. I know that it is dated, but just listen to my loud, boisterous laugh:

PUUUUHH  HUUUH  HUUH ,  PUUUUUUUUUUHHH ,  HUHH  HUH  HUHH

…. HOO  HOOH  PUUUHHH  HAAAH.

I sound just like him, right?

Pokémon Nicknames: Togedemaru

ok_pokemon__togedemaru_in_alola_cosplay_by_krazykari-daov155

All credit goes to the original cosplayer … and  Hey – you electric type — GET AWAY FROM THE POOL when I am in here!

ALOLA COUSINS!!! — wooh! —  whatzit?1? — (Denny reacts to scurrying underfoot, nearly spilling his Pokébeer). What is it with Pokémon and electric mice? First there was Pikachu – along with its pre-evolved and evolved forms, Pichu and Raichu respectively. Then in Pokemon XY, there was Dedenne. Techinically, the little surfing mouse and regional variant “Alolan Raichu” is yet another mouse. (I’m not sure if the water mice — like Marill could inherit an electric move)

Now for the Alola region, there is another little electric ball mouse. Togedemaru!

tog-tumblr_o9lppepjel1ufy5xqo3_250

From Bulbapedia: Togedemaru (same as the Japanese word: トゲデマル  “Togedemaru”) is an Electric and STEEL type Pokémon. There are no known evolutionary forms.

alolaelectricballmouse

I actually think that “Togedemaru” is already a pretty cool name, so I was resistant to nicknaming it. However, when there are sooo many of them – yah — (Denny whirls suddenly, as more mice dart underfoot) … you need to be able to sort them out.

I have named them the same name as my mouse or electric Pokémon – names such as “Eek!-A-Mouse” (after the punk-rock band) or “Voltaire” (after the French philosopher).  Cutesy names like “Sparky”, “Cheeky” or “Mookie” are always applicable.

toge-img_0323

Other suggestions:

Rotund” because it is a fat, spherical little mouse. Other names based on spheres, circles or balls might work. “Circle Shock” base on the famous LA punk band “Circle Jerks

Zig Zag” after the tail.

Plug-N-Play” for various electronic devices. “Plug-Ins” after the room deodorizer.

Topo Gigio” after the famous mouse who used to appear on the Ed Sullivan Show. This led me to think of “Gigli” after one of the worst movies of all time, staring one of the most arrogant and idiotic actors of our time.

You might name Togedemaru based on which moves you teach it. It can learn the move “Rollout” early on, so you might use the name “Rollerball” after the classic sci-fi movie.  “Topspin” or “Holy Roller” are other examples. The Pokémon may have the “Iron Barbs” ability, which will make your opponent think twice before hitting you with a physical move. You could name females “Barb” or “Barbs” , “Rhubarb” and the like.

My favorite name is “Lectricshave” after the shaving lotion commercial. Electric shaving comes to mind since Togedemaru is both Electric and Steel type. Ahem … (Denny takes long slug of his Pokébeer). Ladies, use that electric shaver today, and see just how enthusiastic that makes your fellow tonight. I guarantee there will create some electricity.

My other favorite name for Togedemaru is “Toga Toga” or “Toga! Toga!” after a scene in the “Animal House” movie. Clip linked here.

(Denny finished Pokébeer) Well, I never say that you have to use my names —  I only want to inspire your own creative names.

Pokémon Nicknames: Stufful and Bewear

partofcorocoro9162

Today on “Pokémon Nicknames”, I consider Stufful and Bewear. (Denny knocks Sapporo beer can over, but picks it up quickly with little spillage): Oops … sorry … I’m a klutz, and sometimes have a hard time holding onto items. No I’m not drunk … Oh .. right (Denny in stilted falsetto): Alola … er …ALOLA COUSINS! Today I will suggest nicknames for two cute, cuddly – but DANGEROUS Pokémon.

Be warned … or “Be Ware” – ha ha, because I have a mind … that wanders …

On the Bulbapedia web site it says that Stufful (in Japanese: ヌイコグマ  “Nuikoguma”) is a Normal + Fighting dual-type Pokémon. Stufful is the “Flailing Pokémon” supposedly because it would flail around its cute stuffed-animal-like arms. Many Pokémon fans like to buy plush dolls of their favorite Pokémon. Maybe it is time for a Pokémon that is already a stuffed animal!

does-stufful-have-a-tag

Stufful even has a tag!

A cute name might be “Socks” or “Sock Buddy” … (hic)

Stufful evolves into Bewear (in Japanese: キテルグマ  “Kiteruguma”) at level 27, where it remains a Normal + Fighting dual-type. Beware is the “Strong Arm” Pokémon. Bulbapedia says: “While Bewear may appear friendly, it is actually a very dangerous Pokémon. It must never be approached carelessly, even if it is merely swinging its arms around in a friendly fashion. It shows affection with a fond embrace, but its hugs have incredible force.” The story goes that many trainers have been severely injured, and some were even killed by Beware’s loving hugs.

(credit goes to the unknown artist)

Stufful is the perfect Pokémon for those of us who love Japanese Popular Culture! Its ears even look like those “headband ears” which are so popular with cosplayers, maid café goers, Japanese schoolgirls and/or the otaku of the Akihabara district of Tokyo.  Cat (neko) ears are probably the most common headband ears, but mouse, fox, bear or other fuzzy animal ears are also common.

cosplayer-with-white-headband-ears

Her cosplay ears are the biggest giveaway that she would love to meet and date a fellow nerd like you!

You should use Tokyo Pop Culture type names for the Pokémon. Names like “Akihabara”, “Shibuya”, or “Harajuku” would be appropriate. I also named one of these bears “Otaku”. “Yuri” or “Yoai” would also be fun, if you enjoy those genres of anime and/or manga.

 stuffbearimg_0302

Stufful is a plush doll, so maybe you could use “Doll Parts” after the song by the 1990s alt-rock band Hole (linked here). Cutesy names like “I Wuv You” , “Cuddles” or “Fuzzy Wuzzy” should also work when you bear evolves. “Huggie Bear” is based on the archtypical and quintesential “pimp” character from the 1970s TV police series “Starsky and Hutch“.

A good name would be “Gyu” or “Gyu Gyu Gyu” which is loosely translated as “hugs” or “squeezes”. It is one of those Japanese words which do not translate directly into English. When you give someone a hug there is that wonderful moment, when the hug “becomes a hug” and the mutual feeling of love is exchanged — Gyu!

Another Japnese pop culture name might be “Moe” which loosely describes affectionate aspects of otaku culture.

A good name for a fighting-type I have used is “Hold-My-Beer“. Speaking of …

The Pokémon pink color is off course very “kawaii” but the bright pink is juxtaposed with dark brown portions of its body.  This combination put me off at first, but I understand it is popular, and I have learned to love it.

stuffbearimg_0295

This color juxtaposition led me to name one of my party Pokémon “PinkAndStink”.

(Denny turns to drinking buddies): You know guys, “the pink” is about the most wonderful thing that there is in this existence. It also is located in very close proximity to “the stink”.  (Gulps) They are both delightful in their own ways … (Sapporo can drops again, but is quickly put upright) … they both have their own unique charms. You may have directed yourself to the pink. You probably spend most of your time there, and the points north, but don’t tell me you have not also explored the stink. There is also that wonderful, sensitive border area, right in between the pink and the stink. You can tell a lot about a lady by how well she manages that marchland … You don’t have to be a conquering hero, but it is a great way to bond with her. You might even end up surprising yourself.

Oh … right … Pokémon names … (Denny raises hand, orders another Sapporo).

Pokémon Nicknames: Bruxish

Alola cousins! (Denny imitating Professor Kukui): “Have you tried the fish tacos?”

bruxishtumblr_o9l93mvilp1ttdkobo1_400

Bruxish (in Japanese: ハギギシリ “Hagigishiri” is a Water and Psychic dual type. Thus far, there are no known evolutionary forms. It is given “Gnash Teeth” as its Pokémon category. Gnash teeth? I can hear Mrs. Sinnoh’s teeth gnashing whenever I am playing Pokémon and I’m supposed to be doing chores and home repair.

I was excited and very interested to see this new Alola region Pokémon. It looks weird, and maybe a little unnatural, but that is what I like about it. Some Pokémon resemble their real animal counterparts a little too much. Bruxish is based on a real life Hawaiian Reef Triggerfish. Bruxish’s wild psychedelic coloration also remind me of a real-life Parrotfish as well. Bruxish’s body is more “head-shaped” than fish-shaped it seems. Its mouth reminds me of the Kissing Fishand and the sharp teeth remind me of a Piranha.

Bruxish has an odd flower-like protuberance on the top of its head. It is this organ which is the source of its psychic power. Bruxish’s full biology is described at the Bulbapedia site linked here.

My old hippie friend thinks that you should catch this fish, dry-cure the protuberance – then SMOKE IT for a really mellow buzz. I disagree. I am anti-drugs for one thing, plus I think that Poké-animals should be treated a little more kosher. They are spiritual beings, and they should not exist merely to be over-harvested, or in order to make us feel good about ourselves… but I digress.

lady-caught-a-triggerfish

I used my psychic powers to nab this fish.

I nicknamed a female Bruxish with “Outstanding” potential “Kiss-Me-Kate” after the famous musical of the same name. Here is a song from the movie version. My Kiss-Me-Kate is a ladyfish with the “Strong Jaw” ability, which enhances her “biting” moves. “Psychic Fangs” is her signature move.

bruxishimg_0286

I named another “RazzleDazzel” because the fish’s coloration may dazzle opponents. It has the “Dazzling” ability, which surprises the enemy and makes the opponents’ “priority moves” useless.

bruxishimg_0289

You could name these fish after famous impressionist artists – “Picassofish” after the painter. I think that “Matisse” would be a good arty name, and would work for males or females. You can think of your favorite artist. I named one “ColorMeGone” after the alt-rock group. You may like “ColorMeBad” rather.

Haruka suggested the name "Fish Taco" I dont know why.

Haruka also suggested the name “Fish Taco” I don’t know why.

I named one toothy fish “Britishsmiles” after an episode of “The Simpsons”. Ralph Wiggims was wary of going to a dentist, and lied about brushing his teeth regularly. The dentist pulled out a photo book titled “The Big Book of British Smiles”. The joke being this book would scare children into taking care of their teeth, so that they would not end up looking like a Cockney prostitute. That humorous clip is LINKED HERE.

british-smiles3d6d8114947f7bfa0ea60dc1c42c501c

Also along the British theme, I named a Bruxish “Brexit” because I just thought the fit the fish. It will beat you, then exit. Of course, the real Brexit will never happen, as Britain’s central government does not want the U.K. to leave the EU and will delay the process until it can be voted down in another election. … and yes, I do digress again …

bruxishimg_0290

The hippie movement and psychedelia thing could be mined for more “SummerOfLove” and other groovy names.”Love + Peace” for example. If only there were some way to get this HKT48 song piped into the White House and the Kremlin at the same time.

Some other names I might suggest, but have not used yet include:

Humuhumu” would be a great (shortened) name for the real triggerfish’s Hawaiian name:  “humuhumunukunukuāpuaʻa”.

humuhumutriggerfish

The song is LINKED HERE.

Trig” as Bruxish resembles a trigger-fish, although that name sounds a little too macho for such a gay-colored fish.

bruxish-lost-in-translation-1467300164179

Um … I think this was a translation error from the original Japanese Sun Moon anime.

Dragqueen” due to its lip coloration, and arguably the fish resembles a guy wearing makeup. Covered with makeup, but you can still tell it is a guy. They are pretty good about not gnashing there their teeth though. Ahem … you should see what types of images dirty-minded people are posting about Bruxish on Tumblr … and yes, I digress again.

bruxishimg_0280

You have to watch how you pet these Snapper-fish.

Headshop” due to its shape, and its psychedelic coloration. “Bad Acid” as in the quote “remember the time you took that bad acid, and you got up on top of the roof, and said that you were Jesus Christ and that you could fly?”

What … wait … Fish tacos? You mean those are really real, Haruka ? … I always thought “Fish Taco” was just a euphemism.

Pokémon Nicknames: Pyukumuku

dennys-fav-bukowski-photo

“you can’t beat death  but you can beat death in life, sometimes.”

“Alola cousins!” Have you seen that new Pokémon on the beach?

Pyukumuku (in Japanese: ナマコブシ  “Namakobushi” ) is a Water-type Pokémon of the Alola Region. It has no known evolution. (The Bulbapedia reference page for Pyukumuku is linked here).

pyukumuku-in-game

Pyukumuku’s name already sounds somewhat Japanese, or even Hawaiian. This new Pokémon is based on real-life “sea cucumbers” a type of echinoderm (which are sea animals related to starfish).

The sound (or “cry”) it makes is “Puke … Muke”.

beach-pyu

This is appropriate because one of Pyukumuku’s abilities is “Innards Out”. When Pyukumuku faints in battle, it expels its inner organs. This move will deal damage to the opponent “equal to the amount of HP it had left before last being hit.” (from Bulbapedia)

innards-out-7l8n3w5

This defensive strategy is very similar to real sea cucumbers, which when disturbed by a predator, will “spill its guts” out. Now how this would be is an evolutionary adaptation for the echinoderm, I do not quite understand. However, these creatures do have an extreme capacity to regenerate injured or missing parts. It is probably not a big deal for the sea cucumber to (literally) blow guts.  It will just grow more. The expelled filaments are said to be sticky and toxic, so I guess any predator would just get disgusted and leave. See video link here.

One time while out on a college marine biology field trip, our group happened upon a sea cucumber trapped in a rocky inter-tidal pool. This one chick ran over and squealed “I want to do it” … but too late, the Prof had already squeezed it first. She was disappointed and angry that she was not able to squeeze the life juices out of a pulsating cucumber. Looking back, I have to wonder about that chick, and what type of psycho-sexual urges she had … and yes, I see that I digress once again.

Maybe “Joy Explosion” for female Pyukumuku?

Some players might nickname Pyukumuku “puke” type names. I can’t say that  I have many suggestions that would fit this echinoderm. Perhaps “Air Lunch”, “Wolf Cookie”  or “Blow Chuck” are representative examples. How could you not name one “Ralph“? I didn’t think too hard about this, as these are all euphemisms for … well … you know … which reminds me again of my drunken college Biology-majoring years.

Now if we could consider a completely different phylum of animal, you might name a Pyukumuku “Afterbirth” or “Born Again”. When Pyukumuku expels its own innards it does remind us of the afterbirth which comes out of all female mammals after birthing their young. Thus, “Placenta” might be another name on this theme.

Sometimes a Christian friend of mine would say that they became “Born Again” when they accepted their religion. I always would reply “Wow, you must have left a really big afterbirth!” (You see, I was a very sarcastic …  and troubled young college student.)

Human placenta from just after birth with the umbilical cord in place. "ye will be born again ..."

Human placenta from just after birth with the umbilical cord in place. “Ye will be born again …”

Ladies … Ahem … something else to consider; all mammals eat their own placenta after giving birth. The afterbirth contains a lot of nutrients which are needed by the young ones, and these minerals and antibodies will be transferred trough your milk of human kindness.  (Cough.) Just sayin’ … who am I to argue with millions of years of mammalian evolutionary adaptation … and yes, I digress once again.

You could try various “Squishy” names. A good name might be “Squanchy” or “Squanching” after the Rick and Morty character and act.

My FAVORITE nickname for Pyukumuku is “Bukowski” after the famous American poet Charles Bukowski.  When asked how to pronounce his name, the late writer would reply “ It is BUKE –owski … it rhymes with PUKE …”.  See time 1:45 on this YT video linked here

The late Mr. Bukowski (1920 – 1994) was popular with the American “counterculture” of the 1970s and beyond. He was published in The New Yorker magazine. He was published in Hustler magazine.

From Wikipedia: “Bukowski wrote thousands of poems, hundreds of short stories and six novels, eventually publishing over 60 books. The FBI kept a file on him as a result of his column, Notes of a Dirty Old Man, in the LA underground newspaper Open City”.

His semi-fictional autobiography “Barfly” was made into a movie starring Mickey Rourke (the trailer is linked here.)

Ahem. (Denny get uncharacteristically serious for a moment):

Dear friends, I would like to share some of Charles Bukowski’s poetry posted on YouTube linked here … as long as these things might last before being taken down for some reason.  My FAVORITE Bukowski poem is “The Laughing Heart”.  Just to be sure the words last, in case the video is blocked, let me post the original Bukowski-typed page. Just for you, dear heart.

You might also enjoy this version read by singer Tom Waits (linked here).
